Medicare Advantage dental in 2026 — what your plan may cover

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan in Florida and you've been putting off fixing your teeth, it's worth checking what your plan includes this year. Many plans include dental coverage — often for dentures, and on some plans, implants. But there's a catch: if you don't use your benefits before December 31, you lose them. They don't roll over.

Most Medicare Advantage beneficiaries in Miami-Dade have annual dental benefits their plan already paid for — and many never use them. That benefit vanishes on January 1st. Not sure what's left on yours? We'll check it for you, free, in English or Spanish.

What Medicare Advantage plans cover for dental

Preventive (covered at 100% by nearly all plans)

Two cleanings per year, exams, X-rays, and fluoride. Most plans have no copay for these. If you haven't been to the dentist in years, start here.

Basic (partial coverage)

Fillings, simple extractions, gum treatment (scaling and root planing). If you have periodontitis — and most adults over 65 have some degree of gum disease — a full gum treatment can cost $1,000-$2,000 without insurance. With a good plan, your share drops considerably.

Major (partial coverage with annual maximum)

This is where dentures and implants live. Coverage varies significantly between plans:

Complete dentures: Cost $2,000-$3,500 without insurance in Miami. Many Florida Medicare Advantage plans cover a meaningful portion — exactly how much depends on your plan, which is why it pays to verify first.

Dental implants: Some plans cover implants and many don't. An individual implant in Miami (implant, abutment and crown) costs $4,000-$6,000. With coverage, your share can drop significantly. Not all plans cover it, so check yours.

Implant-supported dentures: A popular option for people who don't want their denture to slip when they eat or talk. Two or four implants hold the denture in place so it doesn't slip, while you can still remove it to clean it. Total market cost $10,000-$15,000. With MA, you can cover a portion — especially if you combine the dental benefit with your plan's other allowances.

Not all Medicare Advantage plans cover dentures the same way

Two neighbors on the same street can both carry Medicare Advantage and still pay very different amounts for the same denture. The name printed on the card tells you almost nothing. What decides your cost is the dental rider attached to that plan — and the rider is rewritten every plan year.

Four things determine what you actually pay: whether major services are included at all (some plans stop at cleanings and fillings), what share of the major category the plan takes on, whether dental has its own annual maximum, and whether your dentist is in network. A plan with a modest premium and a serious dental rider often serves you better than a better-known plan with dental added as an afterthought. Have Humana? Two more details people discover too late: some plans apply a waiting period before major work is covered, and nearly all of them want a pre-authorization on file before the lab starts your denture. Neither is a problem in September. Both become one in December. We read the dental section of your plan out loud with you, in English or Spanish, no rush — and you get a clear price in writing before anything begins. That check is free and takes a few minutes.

How to maximize your MA dental benefits in 2026

Step 1: Call the number on the back of your MA card and ask exactly what your annual dental benefit is, what percentage they cover by category (preventive, basic, major), and what your annual maximum is. Or let us do it for you: free verification, in English or Spanish.

Step 2: Schedule your cleaning and exam as soon as possible with your current dentist — preventive care shouldn't wait.

Step 3: If you need major work (dentures, implants, gum treatment), request a detailed estimate and submit it to your plan for pre-authorization. This confirms what they'll cover before you start.

Step 4: Plan your treatment to complete it before December 31. Benefits reset on January 1 — what you didn't use, you lost.
